How do you fix orange hair?

Orange hair is very simply hair that has not been bleached enough.

The best thing to do if you have orange hair is to bleach it some more to get rid of the orange and take it to pale yellow.

However, sometimes it is not possible to do that.

And sometimes the client is not looking to go that blonde.

So in such cases, what you should do is to tone down the orange hair in order to make it more consistent and attractive.

3 Different Ways of Toning Orange Hair

There are at least 3 ways you can tone down orange hair

Which way you choose will depend on how much orange you have in your hair and what level the hair is at.

1. Using Blue Based Colors

If the hair is yellow-orange or orange-yellow or orange bordering on yellow that means it is around level 6-7

In such cases you should consider using blue based blonde colors.

Blue is the opposite of yellow-orange on the color wheel and will tend to cancel out that color.

We recommend that you choose a blue based color which is medium or dark blonde so that you can cover the orange.

So colors like Light Cold Ash Blonde 8.1bCold Ash Blonde 7.1b and Dark Cold Ash Blonde 6.1b will work very well.

Squeeze in an inch of Ash Blue Additive into your mix for extra blue pigments. It will help!

This will give you a concentrate of blue which can be very helpful in getting rid of brass.

2. Using Ash Based Colors

If the hair has is really orange, with no yellow visible, than that that means that your hair is at a level 5-6.

At this level, you should be using ash rather than blue.

Ash contains green as well as blue and is the opposite to orange on the color wheel.

Ugly Duckling has Dark Ash Blonde 6.1Light Deep Ash Brown 5.11 (double ash) and Deep Ash Brown 4.11 which are all very effective.

You can also add in some extra ash by using the Ash Grey Additive concentrate to get extra ash.

3. Using Brown Based Colors

A third strategy you can consider using is using brown to tone down orange.

Using brown will give you a more rich, vibrant and full color result when you want to go down a level.

The other advantage of using browns is that they are very good at covering grey hair.

Ugly Duckling browns are called Chestnut. Their numbers end in .7 or Br (meaning Brown).

The Ugly Duckling colors here that you should consider are Chestnut Blonde 7.7Dark Chestnut Blonde 6.7 and Light Chestnut Brown 5.7
