How to Use Purple Shampoo and Mask as a Hair Toner

What does Purple Shampoo & Mask do? How do they work?

Ugly Duckling's Purple Shampoo & Mask contain intense purple pigments.

Have a look at the Color Wheel below.

As you can see, purple is the exact opposite of yellow on the color wheel. The 2 colors cancel each other out. If you don't believe us, try with some crayons and you will see!

The purple pigments in the purple shampoo & mask act to kill the yellowness in blonde hair and make blonde hair more white.

In this way Purple Shampoo & Mask act as a toner, killing yellow reflects and making blonde hair more white.

WHAT COLOR DOES MY HAIR NEED TO BE FOR PURPLE SHAMPOO TO WORK?

Purple hair will work on any hair as long as the color is blonde.
It doesn't matter whether the hair is naturally blonde or lightened blonde.
However it is important to realize that Purple shampoo and Mask will tone and correct blonde hair, but they do not lift.

Take a look at the picture below.

As long as your hair is level 9 or lighter (in other words, pale yellow or palest yellow), purple shampoo and mask will do a great job getting rid of the remaining yellow and toning hair white.

But if your hair is level 8 or darker (in other words, very yellow, or yellow-orange or anything darker as opposed to light yellow) it would be better to use a quality bleach and/or a regular toner using peroxide first.

Once done, you can then use purple shampoo and mask.

Your Detailed Guide to Which Product to Use When Your Hair is Yellow

WHEN TO USE BLEACH, WHEN TO USE TONER, WHEN TO USE PURPLE SHAMPOO & MASK

If your hair is level 9-10, use purple shampoo and mask & you will get great results.

If your hair is level 8-9, use no-lift pearl blonde toner 10V with 20 Vol developer. Then purple shampoo and mask to finish.

If your hair is level 6-7, use intense pearl blonde toner 100V with 20 Vol developer. Then purple shampoo and mask.

If your hair is seriously orange, or level 5 or darker, you will need to lift first with bleach. Then tone. Then purple shampoo and mask.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE UGLY DUCKLING PURPLE SHAMPOO & THE PURPLE MASK?

Both contain the purple pigments that tone yellow hair.

Both are sulfate-free. acidic formulations (meaning that they help close the hair cuticle and keep it in good condition). And gluten-free.

The shampoo, being a shampoo, contains sulfate-free cleaning and foaming agents.

Whereas the mask contains only toning & treatment agents as well as essential oils including Argan and Avocado oil.

It is therefore very suitable for leaving on the hair for an extended period of time (10 minutes, for example).

We recommend that you use both.

HOW SHOULD I APPLY PURPLE SHAMPOO & MASK?

For Purple Shampoo

Apply to Wet Hair and Massage Very Thoroughly - at least 5 minutes.

Make sure every part of the hair has been thoroughly saturated with shampoo.

Leave on for another 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

For Purple Mask

Apply using a dye brush or fingers.

Apply on lengths and ends first, not roots. Rub in really really well.

Leave on for around 10 minutes, ideally under a plastic cap and using some gentle indirect heat (how towel or steamer). This allows the purple pigments to penetrate the hair cuticle.

Both products can be used in the salon straight after bleaching and coloring or be used as a regular maintenance product to keep the hair white.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE PURPLE SHAMPOO AND MASK?

The products are acidic, or low pH (meaning that they will close the hair cuticles and return them to a healthy state) and contain conditioning ingredients.

They are also sulfate-free, so that they can be used regularly.

The purple mask contains more purple pigments than the purple shampoo.

In general, we would suggest both products once a week to keep hair sparking white blonde.
