1. Check your Customer's Hair Condition. 

• Make sure the hair is strong and has not lost its elasticity.

2. Choose the correct strength of developer for Your Bleach.

• Use bleach with 10 Vol. developer for gentle color washing.
• Use bleach with 20 Vol. developer for color stripping and controlled lifting.
• Use bleach with 30 Vol developer for lifting of 3 levels of lift and more.

3. Get the right mix.

• The recommended mix for Ugly Duckling Brilliant Blonde is 1 part Ugly Duckling Brilliant Blonde Powder Bleach Lightener with 2 parts developer.
• You should try and get a gravy-like consistency, watery enough for easy application but not so watery that it drips off your brush.
• Bear in mind that the bleach mixture will stop being active the moment it turns dry.

4. Apply in sections starting from the back.

• After mixing up your bleach, you now need to divide your client's hair into sections. 
• To do this, part your client's hair down the middle from the front of your head to the back, then once more from ear to ear.
• You will now have four quadrant sections which you need to tie up with sectioning clips.
• Now you can let one section down and begin working on just one section at a time.

5. Work Your Way Round the Head.

• Take very thin mini-sections and apply your bleach mixture with a dye brush. You can use foil also if you like. 
• Start from the back at the bottom, where your hair is the thickest.
• After you've completely applied bleach to one section, you need to move through each of the other sections until your hair is covered fully.
• The quicker you do this, the more even the colour result will be. An even bleaching gives the best result.

6. Dealing with Hair Near the Scalp.

• It is a good idea to not apply to the roots immediately or else they will end up lighter than the rest of your hair due to the warmth of your scalp.
• Instead, return to this area later in order to give this area less processing time. This way you will get a consistent result from roots to ends.
• Use 20 Vol when applying near the scalp.
• Never apply bleach directly onto the scalp as this may provoke reactions. It is preferable to stay 1/8 inch away at least.

7. Keep Checking Your Client's Hair Color Level through Processing Time.

• Keep checking the hair color level as it develops. You need to be ready to rinse as soon you get to the desired hair color level. 
• The maximum development time is around 30 minutes.
• If you have not attained your desired hair color level, it is better to rinse off and re-apply a fresh mixture rather than let it process longer.

8. For Ash Blonde Results, Please Lift to Level 9 (see below)

Sometimes, colorists make the mistake of under-bleaching and this only ends up in a hair color result which is too yellow, too brassy, and not blonde enoughleaving your client disappointed.

9. Emulsify and Rinse.

• After development, emulsify, rinse and wash with a mild, preferably acidic shampoo.
• This helps to close the coloring process.
• We recommend you use Purple Toning Shampoo and Mask as this both helps to close the cuticle and takes any remaining yellow in the hair out.

10. After Bleach, Tone.

• For getting an attractive hair color result, you will need to do a second color application after bleaching ("Toning").
• Ugly Duckling's best selling toners Intense Pearl Blonde, Intense Silver Blonde, Pearl Blonde, Silver Blonde work very well and we recommend them.
• Cool colors with violet or blue in it to neutralize the warm undertones also work very well. Colors like 10.20, 10.1 9.1, etc can be used.
• Toners need to be processed around 10-15 minutes, whereas colors need the full processing time of 30 minutes.
• Mix your toner or color with 10 or 20 Vol depending on the lift that you have after the bleach and apply on the full head.
• Process.
• Emulsify and rinse.

Directions For A Successful Full Head Application

• Use 20 Vol Developer for 1-2 levels of lift, and 30 Vol for 3 levels of lift and more.

• Mix 1 part Lightener to 2 parts Developer.

• Make fine sections, starting from the back, where it is thicker. Then work your way round.

• Try to saturate the hair really well with product.

• Work fast to give the entire head a relatively even processing time. You can use foil on the lengths. This will help keep heat in and process the hair faster.

• Hair near the root is thinner and gets heat from the scalp. You should apply here only towards the end, with 20 Vol.

• Always watch carefully while the mix is processing, checking for hair condition, elasticity and lift.

• There is no fixed development time for bleach and you should be prepared to rinse as soon as the hair is ready.

• For an ultra-white blonde result, lift the hair until all orange and yellow has been taken out: a true level 10.

• If the mix starts to dry out in certain parts or is lifting less fast, you should make a fresh mix on those parts and re-apply.

• After 30 minutes processing time you need to rinse.

• If the hair is not sufficiently lifted, re-apply making a fresh mix.

Directions for A Regrowth Application

• Use 20 Vol Developer. Mix: 1 part Lightener to 2 parts Developer.

• Watch carefully and rinse when the hair has been lifted up to the same level as the lengths.

After Bleaching

• Tone with Ugly Duckling toners.

Do a patch test before you do anything else

A small mixture of bleach and developer applied to the the scalp to check sensitivities and allergies.

Check your Customer's Hair Condition. 

Make sure the hair is strong and has not lost its elasticity.

Check the hair level and assess how many levels you need to lift by.

Be realistic. Your choice will determine developer choice.

Choose the correct strength of developer 

Use bleach with 10 Vol. developer for gentle color washing.

Use bleach with 20 Vol. developer for color stripping and controlled lifting (1-2 levels)

Use bleach with 30 Vol developer for lifting of 3 levels of lift and more.

Get the right mix.

The recommended mix is is 1 part Ugly Duckling Brilliant Blonde Powder Bleach Lightener with 2 parts developer.

You should try and get a gravy-like consistency, watery enough for easy application.

But not so watery that it drips off your brush.

Bear in mind that the you need to really saturate the hair fibre with your mix. So a very dry mix will not help.

Also bear in mind that bleach mixture will tend to dry out and stop being active when it does so.

For full head bleaching, apply in fine sections starting from the back.

Divide your client's hair into sections.

To do this, part your client's hair down the middle from the front of your head to the back.

Then once more from ear to ear.

You will now have four quadrant sections which you need to tie up with sectioning clips.

Now you can let one section down and begin working on just one section at a time.

Work Your Way Round the Head.

Take very thin mini-sections and apply your bleach mixture with a dye brush. You can use foil also if you like. 

Start from the back at the bottom, where your hair is the thickest.

You then need to move through each of the other sections until your hair is covered fully.

The quicker you do this, the more even the colour result will be. An even bleaching gives the best result.

Dealing with Hair Near the Scalp.

It is a good idea to not apply to the roots immediately or else they will end up lighter than the rest of your hair due to the warmth of your scalp.

Instead, return to this area later in order to give this area less processing time.

This way you will get a consistent result from roots to ends.

Use 20 Vol when applying near the scalp.

Even when applying onto the root area, never apply bleach directly onto the scalp.

Instead, try and stay 1/8 inch away from the base of the root area.

Don't worry: Ugly Duckling bleach mix will travel up and will lift the hair all the way up to the base.

Keep Checking Your Client's Hair Color Level through Processing Time.

Keep checking the hair color level as it develops.

You need to be ready to rinse as soon you get to the desired hair color level. 

The maximum development time is around 30 minutes.

If you have not attained your desired hair color level, don't panic.

Just rinse off and re-apply a fresh mixture rather than let it process longer.

This time use only 20 Vol developer. It will be enough!

8. For Ash Blonde Results, Please Lift to Level 9 (see below)

Sometimes, colorists make the mistake of under-bleaching and this only ends up in a hair color result which is too yellow, too brassy, and not blonde enoughleaving your client disappointed.

Emulsify and Rinse.

After development, emulsify, rinse and wash with an acidic shampoo.

Acid based hair care help to close the hair cuticle and will make the end result look much healthier and stronger.

This helps to close the coloring process.

We recommend you use Brilliant Blonde Purple Toning Shampoo and Mask to help tone away any remaining yellow.

And we recommend you use Brilliant Blondexx hair treatment with Bond Protect after bleaching.

It will make the hair fiber much stronger.

After Bleach, Tone.

For getting an attractive hair color result, you will need to do a second color application after bleaching ("Toning").

Ugly Duckling's best selling toners Intense Pearl Blonde, Intense Silver Blonde, Pearl Blonde, Silver Blonde work very well and we recommend them.

Cool colors with violet or blue in it to neutralize the warm undertones also work very well. Colors like 10.20, 10.1 9.1, etc can be used.

If the hair is very well lifted, you can also use ammonie-free toning product such as Ugly Duckling's new Blondify range.

These work in just 10 minutes, They are liquid toners and can be poured straight over the hair after bleaching.

Mix your toner or color with 10 or 20 Vol depending on the lift that you have after the bleach and apply on the full head.

Process.

Emulsify and rinse.

How To Succeed with you Intense Pearl Blonde Toner Application:

• If hair is not already blonde, lift using Brilliant Blondexx Lightener & Developer. 
• Try to eliminate as much of the brassiness as possible and make sure hair is at level 8/9 for best results (see below)
• Rinse when this has been achieved.
• Towel dry to get rid of excess moisture.
• Now apply Intense Pearl Blonde Toner 100V. Use with 10 or 20 Vol developer.
• Use with 10 Vol if your hair is truly well pre-lightened to a level 10.
• Otherwise, use 20 Vol developer. 
• Make sure your product and developer mix is runny (1 part toner to 2 parts developer).
• This will help you work fast and get an even color result.
• Try and saturate the hair with as much product as possible.
• Rinse as soon as you get the desired color result (NB product is very fast acting)
• Normally 10 minutes of processing time is sufficient to neutralize all yellow.

• Apply with fingers or a dye brush. Apply only to clean, towel dried hair. 
• Make sure every part of the hair comes gets enough product.
• Apply on the ends first, as these parts typically need more intensive conditioning. 
• For best results, wrap up with a plastic cap or towel so that the heat from the scalp can be retained.
• If possible, use gentle indirect heat (a professional salon climazone is best). This will help the color transfer process.
• Leave 10 minutes.
• Rinse.
• Recommended frequency of use: once a week, depending on degree of toning required.

RECOMMENDED TREATMENT ROUTINE:
